Denominations of Judaism
Jewish movements, often referred to as denominations, branches of Judaism.
1. Orthodox Judaism:
Orthodox Jews believe that God gave Moses the whole Torah (Written and Oral) at Mount Sinai.
2. Conservative Judaism:
Conservative Judaism maintains that the ideas in the Torah come from God, but were transmitted by humans .
3. Reform Judaism:
Reform Judaism believes that the Torah was written by different human sources, rather than by God, and then later combined.
4. Reconstructionist Judaism:
Reconstructionists believe that Judaism is an "evolving religious civilization." In one way it is more liberal than Reform Judaism - the movement does not believe in a personified deity that is active in history and does not believe that God chose the Jewish people.
RABBIS SERVING UNAFFILIATED FAMILIES
AND INDIVIDUALS
Bar Mitzvah
Bar Mitzvah literally translates to "son of commandment" and implies "responsible male."
According to Jewish Law, every Jewish boy becomes a bar mitzvah at age 13. As a
bar mitzvah, he becomes obligated by God's commandments - as prescribed in the Torah
and as interpreted by Moses, the Prophets, the Sages and the Rabbis. The bar mitzvah boy
also becomes eligible to count in a prayer quorum (minyan), lead prayer services, testify
before a religious court.
Bat Mitzvah
Bat Mitzvah literally translates to "daughter of commandment" and implies "responsible female."
According to Jewish Law, every Jewish girl becomes a bat mitzvah at age 12 - a year earlier
than a Jewish boy becomes a bar mitzvah due to the fact that girls mature earlier than boys.
As a bat mitzvah, she becomes obligated by God's commandments - as prescribed in the Torah
and as interpreted by Moses, the Prophets, the Sages and the Rabbis.
